Choosing the Right Treatment

Which lymphatic treatment should I choose?

Clinical Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle starting point for general wellbeing, lymphatic maintenance, fluid retention, heaviness and tissue congestion.

Advanced Lymphatic Therapies are best suited to more complex, long-standing or whole-body lymphatic concerns.

Post-Operative & Scar Therapy is suitable after surgery, or when scar tissue, fibrosis, restricted movement, post-operative swelling or tissue tightness are the main concerns.

Lymphoedema & Lipoedema Support is recommended for diagnosed or suspected lymphoedema or lipoedema.

Complete Integrative Lymphatic Assessment is best if you are unsure where to begin, have multiple symptoms, or want a detailed 90-minute assessment with treatment and personalised recommendations.

What is the difference between Clinical Lymphatic Drainage and Advanced Lymphatic Therapies?

Clinical Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, rhythmic treatment designed to support lymphatic flow, fluid balance and tissue congestion.

Advanced Lymphatic Therapies offer a more comprehensive approach and may include clinical lymphatic drainage, osteopathic techniques and specialised tools to support more complex swelling, heaviness, tightness or whole-body concerns.

Should I book lymphatic drainage, remedial massage or an integrative assessment?

If your main concern is swelling, fluid retention, heaviness or lymphatic congestion, lymphatic drainage is usually the best option.

If your main concern is muscle pain, tension, headaches, restricted movement or postural strain, remedial massage may be more suitable.

If you have multiple symptoms, fatigue, inflammation, digestive concerns, lymphatic issues or you are unsure where to start, a Complete Integrative Lymphatic Assessment may be the best first appointment.

Lymphatic, Lipoedema & Lymphoedema Support

What is clinical lymphatic drainage?

Clinical Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, specialised treatment that supports healthy lymphatic flow and assists the body’s natural fluid movement.

It uses precise, rhythmic techniques to support fluid balance, reduce tissue congestion and help the body feel lighter, less heavy and more at ease.

Can lymphatic drainage help swelling, fluid retention and heaviness?

Lymphatic drainage may support swelling, fluid retention, heaviness, puffiness and tissue congestion by encouraging healthy lymphatic movement and fluid balance.

It can be helpful for people who feel heavy, sluggish, swollen or congested, especially when combined with hydration, movement, compression where needed and lifestyle support.

Do you support lymphoedema and lipoedema?

Yes. Totally Well provides lymphatic support for diagnosed or suspected lymphoedema and lipoedema.

Appointments may include clinical lymphatic drainage, assessment, education, treatment planning and ongoing management support.

Where appropriate, we may also discuss compression, movement, skin care, self-care strategies and referral back to your GP or specialist.

How many lymphatic drainage sessions will I need?

This depends on your symptoms, goals and how your body responds.

We usually recommend starting with 3–4 weekly sessions. This allows us to assess your response, support lymphatic flow consistently and build momentum.

After the initial phase, treatment may move into a maintenance plan, such as fortnightly, monthly or as needed, depending on your body, lifestyle and ongoing goals.

Post-Operative, Scar & Recovery

When can I start lymphatic drainage after surgery?

This depends on the type of surgery, your surgeon’s instructions and your stage of healing.

Some clients are cleared for gentle post-operative lymphatic drainage during the early recovery phase, while others need to wait longer. If you are unsure, please check with your surgeon or medical team before booking.

Can you help with scar tissue, fibrosis and tissue tightness?

Yes. Post-Operative & Scar Therapy may support scar tissue, fibrosis, restricted movement, tissue tightness, post-operative swelling and areas that feel firm, congested or uncomfortable.

Treatment is tailored to your healing stage and may include gentle lymphatic drainage, scar therapy, myofascial techniques and other hands-on approaches and tools where appropriate.

How many post-surgical treatments will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your surgery, swelling, bruising, scar tissue, fibrosis, tissue tightness and healing response.

Some clients may only need a few sessions, while others benefit from a more consistent plan, especially in the early recovery phase. In some cases, treatment may be recommended once or twice weekly to begin with, then reduced as swelling, tissue congestion and mobility improve.

For more complex post-operative recovery, scar tissue or fibrosis, support may continue over several weeks or months, followed by maintenance or review appointments as needed.

Appointments, Rebates & Safety

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book most appointments at Totally Well. You can book directly online.

If you have a diagnosed medical condition such as lymphoedema, active cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, blood clots, infection, or you have recently had surgery, we may ask for medical clearance before treatment.

Do you offer HICAPS or health fund rebates?

HICAPS may be available for eligible remedial massage and lymphatic appointments, depending on your health fund and level of cover.

Rebates vary between providers, so please check directly with your health fund to confirm whether your treatment is covered.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change in and out of.

Your therapist will explain what is needed for your treatment and will always use appropriate draping to keep you comfortable and covered.

When should I avoid lymphatic drainage or massage?

Please avoid treatment if you are unwell with fever, infection, contagious illness, unexplained sudden swelling, suspected blood clot, or new symptoms that have not been medically assessed.

If you have cancer, heart disease, kidney disease, active infection, blood clot history, lymphoedema, recent surgery or a complex medical condition, please let us know before booking so we can guide you safely.
